Up-Skilling Course for Existing Embalmers


This course is specifically designed to anyone interested in gaining formal training and qualification in embalming practice through the Professional Embalmers’ Association of Ireland. A minimum hands-on experience  of 10 years on embalming is required to gain entry into the course.

The theory part of the course is delivered through a one-week intensive attendance learning and a distance study over a three-month period.


Course Contents

The theory section comprises of four Modules.

• Module I           (Origin and Advancements of Embalming)

• Module II         (Anatomy and Physiology)

• Module III       (Embalming Theory)

• Module IV        (Embalming Practice)


Final Theory Examination

Upon successful completion of all the Modules, the student will be put forward by the Course Provider to sit the Final Theory exam which is set and corrected by an approved examiner from the DCAEBMS.

Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE)

Upon successful completion of the Final Theory Exam and completion of the minimum case requirements set by the Exam Board, the student (with the approval of the Course Provider) may apply for the OSPE.


The course is approved by the Deathcare Academy Examinations Board of Mortuary Science (DCEBMS) and the Professional Embalmers’ Association of Ireland (PEAI). Upon successful completion of the Final Theory and OSPE set by the DCEBMS, students will be entitled to apply for Full Membership of the PEAI (
